 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Eygptian Plover

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Pluvianidae

You can get "Checklist of the Eygptian Plover of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Egyptian Plovers contains only one species. The Egyptian Plover is a little shy bird with a body length of 19 cm to 21 cm. There is no photographic evidence of a symbiosis between Egyptian Plovers and crocodiles. The distribution area extends to central and southern sub-Saharan Africa, in Egypt they are extinct probably due to the construction of the Aswan dam. The birds live in small groups on rivers and lakes and feed on insects and mollusks. They lay their eggs in hollows in the ground on sandbanks and use the heat of the sun to incubate; they just sit on the eggs with water-soaked belly plumage for cooling. The chicks are nidifugous.
