The family of Pittas can be found in Central and South Africa, Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. The birds are bulky, have short wings, short tails and long legs. The neck is short and the beak strong. The body length ranges from 15 cm to 30 cm. The plumage has iridescent colors. Despite the bright colors, they are secret ground dwellers and not easy to spot. Their diet consists of small animals and fruits. the large covered nest made of twigs, leaves and roots has a side entrance. The 3 to 7 eggs and the nidicolous young are incubated and looked after by both parents.
