Scientific system: Gill et al.

Familia: Neosittidae

You can get "Checklist of the Sittellas of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Sittellas is endemic to Australia and New Guinea. Although their external appearance is reminiscent of Nuthatches and they were temporarily assigned to this family, they have now been given their own family. The body size ranges from 10 cm to 14 cm. They have short tails and a pointed bill that is curved downwards or upwards. Their habitat is forest and scrubland. Their most important food is arthropods, which they usually look for on horizontal branches. They also use their feet to hold the prey as they eat. There are also reports of sticks being used as tools. Basically only the breeding biology of the Australian Sittellas is known. Their nest is created high in the tree as a deep cup by a whole group. Two to three eggs are incubated by the female, possibly by two females, for 19 to 20 days while the male and other helpers feed it. Subsequently, the female takes an extraordinarily long time, i.e. 2 to 3 months, to care for the offspring.
