The family of Tropicbirds occurs on all tropical oceans. With a length of 41 cm to 48 cm, they belong to the medium-sized birds. They have long, pointed wings and a wedge-shaped tail, the central feathers of which are greatly elongated. The legs are very short, the feet are webbed. The head is large with a strong, slightly curved bill. They fly quickly and pounce on small fish and octopus out of the air. They nest in large, heavily populated colonies on the ground or in a crevice. The young are altricial, are fed by both parents and only fledged after up to 15 weeks.
