 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Hamerkops

Scientific system: Howard et al.

Familia: Scopidae

You can get "Checklist of the Hamerkops of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

Only one species belongs to the family of Hamerkops. It occurs only in Africa south of the 12th northern latitude. They are about 50 cm long. The beak is long, straight and compressed at the sides. They have a long crest on the back of the head. The plumage is rather brown in color. They live on rivers, swamps and lakes and look for fish, snails and other aquatic animals in the shallow water. Both partners build a very large covered nest out of twigs, it can be up to 1.80 m high. The 3 to 6 eggs are incubated by both parents. The chicks hatch at very large intervals so that the first one can leave the nest when the last one hatches.
