Familia: Chionidae

You can get "Checklist of the Sheathbills of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The only two species in the family of Sheathbills are inhabitants of the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic. The body length is 36 cm to 43 cm. The clumsy birds have rather long wings and short tails. The legs are short and there are tiny webs between the toes. The beak is short and strong and has a horny sheath at the root of the upper mandible. The habitat of Shethbills are the coasts of the sea. They are omnivores and also eat carrion and waste. The nest is built in a hollow of feathers, shells and waste. The same couple occupy the same place every year. The clutch consists of two to four eggs and the chicks are nidifugous. They are looked after by both parents, but usually only one young will grow up.
