The family of Painted Snipes occurs in Africa, Eurasia, Australia and southern South America. The body length is 19 cm to 24 cm. They have wide wings and long legs with long toes. The females are larger than the males and have more contrasting patterns. As bad flyers, they are secretive, solitary ground birds that are active at dawn and dusk. They live on both small animals and seeds. The precocial chicks are looked after by the male.
