The family of Potoos occurs from Mexico south to Argentina and on some islands in the Caribbean. They become 40 cm to 50 cm long. The body, wings and tail are long. The eyes are very large, the beak is short, narrow and has a curved tip. The feet are very small. The Potoos live in forests and are nocturnal loners. During the day they sit upright motionless on a branch. They mainly eat insects, which they catch from a perch on short flights. The only egg is laid in a cavity in a tree and incubated by both parents. The young are altricial.
