 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Wood-hoopoes

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Phoeniculidae

You can get "Checklist of the Wood-hoopoes of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Wood-hoopoes is restricted to sub-Saharan Africa. Their body length ranges from 22 cm to 40 cm. They inhabit wooded areas. The legs are short, the third and fourth toes are fused at the root, the claws are long and curved. They mainly eat invertebrates and forage in the branches of the trees by skillfully climbing around, sometimes head down, using their tail as a support. They have a strong musty smell that is unpleasant to humans. They don't build a nest but lay 3 to 5 eggs in a tree hole. The female breeds alone, but both parents take care of the altricial young.
