Scientific system: Howard et al.

Familia: Menuridae

You can get "Checklist of the Lyrebirds of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Lyrebirds is endemic to Southeast Australia. Their body length ranges from 75 cm to 100 cm, making them one of the largest songbirds. They have short wings and a long tail, which is very noticeable in males and is used effectively in courtship; its outer feathers are bent like a lyre. They are also able to imitate many artificial and natural voices. Their syrinx is the most complexly-muscled of the passerines and they are capable to carry two tunes at the same time. Their habitat is the rainforest. Their diet is predominantly animal. Lyrebirds start breeding later in life than any other spasserine. The female builds the nest on her own and incubates the only egg for about 52 days. The nesting chick is also looked after by the female.
