The species of the family of Logrunners are native to eastern Australia and New Guinea. Their length ranges from 18 cm to 29 cm. They have short beaks and powerfull feet with well-developed claws. The shafts of the tail feathers are strengthened and protrude like thorns up to 7 mm beyond the ends of the feathers. Their habitat is rainforest. They are strictly carnivorous and scratch and dig in the ground for prey, supporting themselves with their tails in the wet forest. The voice is loud and penetrating. Logrunners are monogamous. The nest is built on the ground from sticks and is domed, the clutch includes one or two eggs. The incubation period is one of the longest for songbirds, while the young need only a very short time to become independent. After fledging, male offspring stay with their parents for more than a year for defense purposes.
