The only two species of the family of Toucan-barbets are restricted to the tropics of Central America and South America from Costa Rica to Ecuador. Their height is between 18 cm and 21 cm. Their bill is smaller than that of some Barbet species, but they are more closely related to the Toucans. Their habitat are moist mountain forests. They are sociable and active during the day. They feed mainly on fruits and also on insects during the breeding season. They use their feet and bill very skillfully in coordination. Both species are monogamous and breed in tree cavities, where they lay 2 to 5 eggs.
