Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Podicipedidae

You can get "Checklist of the Grebes of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Grebes are found on freshwater lakes around the world, except in the extreme north and south and on some islands. In winter they can also be found on the coast of the sea. The size ranges from 20 cm to 50 cm, the wings are short, tail feathers are missing. The toes have flap-like widenings. They only fly regularly and at night during the migration time. In addition, they are well adapted to aquatic life. Both parents lead the striped or spotted young birds until they become independent.
