The only species of the family of Secretarybirds lives in sub-Saharan Africa. The birds are - including the elongated central tail feathers - 125 cm to 150 cm long. They have long, slender legs with short, strong claws. They have a long conspicuous hood. Their habitat is the steppe. When hunting, they roam their territory with long strides, large snakes are killed with kicks. In the top of a tree or on a bush, the couple build a large nest of twigs. The eggs are incubated by the female for six weeks, after which the young are fed insects from the crop for six weeks. Larger feed is added later.
