The family of New Zealand Wrens is endemic to New Zealand. The birds are 8 cm to 10 cm long. They have short round wings and a very short tail. Legs and toes are long and slender. The outer toe has grown together with the middle one at the root. The bill is straight, slender and pointed. Their habitat is forest and bush. They fly badly, walk on the ground, or hop on the branches of trees. Their diet consists of insects, their larvae and spiders. The nests are self-made, roofed or created in natural tree cavities, in both cases provided with an entrance tunnel. The 2 to 5 eggs are incubated by both parents and the altricial young are also looked after by both parents.
