Birds of Chile

€ 10.99 *

Chile, the "elongated country" on the western slopes of the Andes, stretches for more than 4000 km from the tropics through a variety of climatic and vegetation zones to Cape Horn. This diversity is further enhanced by the altitudes, which extend from sea level to 6,893 m. The spectacular landscapes and unique habitats are protected by many nature reserves, including 41 national parks and 8 biosphere reserves, two areas have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. As a result, the avifauna of Chile includes more species than all of Europe, including those that are not found or breed in any other country. BirdLife International has established that Chile extends to 5 Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs), including of course the Juan Fernández Islands, which are more likely to be known under the names Robinson Crusoe and Alejandro Selkirk. Given the abundance of nature, it is not surprising that BirdLife International classifies more than 170 areas as important for global bird populations (IBAs). This fascinating bird life is relatively easy to get to know because of the country's good infrastructure.
