Birds of the Cook Islands

€ 2.49 *

The Cook Islands are located in the southern Pacific and are of volcanic origin. A distinction is made between a northern group of islands with 6 flat islands and a coral reef under water and a southern group of islands with 9 islands and a coral reef under water. The largest is Rarotonga with the capital Avanua and an international airport and Mount Te Manga, which reaches a height of 658m. The climate is temperate to tropical and tropical cyclones can occur from March to December. The Cook Islands are very isolated, so some endemic bird species have evolved here. BirdLife International has recognized two areas in the southern archipelago as EBAs (Endemic Bird Areas). One of the endemic species has now become extinct due to introduced rats. Tourism plays the most important role economically in the Cook Islands. This country has been ranked # 1 in Best Travel Destinations by Lonely Planet for 2022.
