Birds of Tonga

€ 2.99 *

The Kingdom of Tonga is a Polynesian archipelago in the South Pacific comprising more than 170 islands, around 40 of which are inhabited. Tonga is east of the geographic date line (180°) but west of the politically defined date line. The archipelago lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is therefore largely of volcanic origin. The highest point in the country is over 1000 m above sea level on the island of Kao. Tonga's birdlife is of course dominated by seabirds, but Tonga also has two endemic bird species, the pritchard partridge, which is now found not only on Niuafo'ou but has been introduced to several of Tonga's islands, and the Tonga fathead. Tonga is exposed to dangers from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as well as from hurricanes and is one of the most dangerous countries in the world in this regard. Traditionally, the attitude of the residents has been very friendly, in keeping with Tonga's earlier designation as the "Friendly Islands".
