Birds of the Socotra Islands

€ 3.99 *

The Socotra archipelago lies east of the Gulf of Aden. The climate is classified as hot desert or semi-desert. Only the islands of Socotra, Abd al-Kuri and Samhah are inhabited. Because of their isolated location, so many endemic animal and plant species have evolved there that the archipelago has earned the nickname "Galapagos of the Indian Ocean" and World Heritage status. Among them are nine endemic bird species, as well as other bird species that are mostly found on the Socotra archipelago. Although officially part of Yemen, the Socotra Archipelago has been administered by the United Arab Emirates since the war in the Arabian Peninsula.

The Socotra Islands are located in the Indian Ocean. Legally the Socotra Islands belong to Yemen. Because of the number of bird species with restricted range occurring in this area, BirdLife International assigned it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P).
