 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Plains-Wanderers

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Pedionomidae

You can get "Checklist of the Plains-Wanderers of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The only species of Plains-wanderers is endemic to southeast Australia. The birds are 15 cm to 18 cm long. They have short wings and a very short tail. The feet on the long legs have four toes. The females are larger and more heavily patterned. The habitat are open planes. Plains-wanderers are terrestrial who rarely fly and usually walk upright on tiptoe. Their diet consists mainly of plant-based food supplemented by insects. The female dominates the courtship and practises serial polyandry. Thie nest is made on the ground under a tuft of grass. The male incubates the four eggs and also takes care of the young who are precocial. The systematic position of the family has been changed from the order of the Cranes, not least due to DNA studies on the order of the Waders. In any case, they are ancient members of the avifauna of Australia, which dates back to the age of the Gondwana supercontinent.
