AVITOPIA - Crab-plovers
Scientific system: Clements et al.
Familia: Dromadidae
You can get "Checklist of the Crab-plovers of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.
The family of the Crab-plovers includes only one species. It occurs on the coasts of the Indian Ocean from Natal to Myanmar, the African populations are evidently migratory birds. The medium-sized waders are about 38 cm long. They have long legs, long pointed wings and a powerful beak. They specialize in crabs, but also eat other small animals. They are very sociable and nest in colonies. Crab-plovers are unique among waders in that they dig up to two meters long burrows to nest in. The only egg is hatched using the warmth of the soil, too.
