The species in the family of Loons occur in the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere, however, they do migrate. They are between 65 cm and 95 cm long. They have small wings, webbed feet and powerful, pointed beaks. They can dive for up to 40 s, but they need a longer approach to take off. Their nests are always created on the shores of freshwater lakes. The young birds are led by both parents.
