The family of Thick-knees occurs on every continent on earth. They are 36 cm to 52 cm long. They have fairly long wings and a half-length tail. The legs are long and the feet have three webbed toes. The head is thick with large eyes. They are twilight and night birds and some species are gregarious. They rarely fly and feed on various small animals. Two eggs are usually laid in the nests on the ground. Both parents breed and later look after the young.
