 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Nightjars

Scientific system: Howard et al.

Familia: Caprimulgidae

You can get "Checklist of the Nightjars of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Nightjars is found all over the world, with the exception of the colder areas and New Zealand. The body length is between 19 cm and 30 cm, but elongated wing feathers appear in two species. Nightjars have long wings and tails, but their legs, toes, and claws are small. The beak is also small, but the throat is very wide. They are crepuscular and nocturnal and sit motionless on the ground or on a branch during the day. They feed on insects that they prey on in flight. The eggs are usually laid directly on the ground. There are also species among the nightjars that hibernate.
