 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Tree-swifts

Scientific system: Howard et al.

Familia: Hemiprocnidae

You can get "Checklist of the Tree-swifts of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The only four species of the family of Treeswifts are found only in Southeast Asia from India to the Solomon Islands. The body size ranges from 15 cm to 33 cm. The slender birds have long, pointed wings and a long forked tail. Unlike the true swifts, their hind toe is non-reversible. Their habitat are tree-lined landscapes. They are mostly in the air, but also sit on trees. They only feed on insects that they catch in flight. The nest is made of hardened saliva and feathers that are glued to a branch high in the tree. The nest is so small and fragile that the incubating adult bird can only sit on the branch and not on the nest. The only egg is incubated by both parents and the altricial chick is looked after by both parents.
