The only species of the family of Palmchats is endemic to Hispaniola, Saona, and Gonâve islands. Palmchats are approx. 20 cm long. Their habitat are tree-lined open landscapes, e.g. Palm savannas. Their diet consists of fruits, berries and flowers. They are very sociable. They build large communal nests in the crown of palm trees. The whole structure can be up to 2 m in diameter and up to 30 nests with separate chambers and entrances.
