 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Ground-rollers

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Brachypteraciidae

You can get "Checklist of the Ground-rollers of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Ground-rollers is endemic to Madagascar. Their length ranges from 24 cm to 47 cm. They have shorter wings and longer legs than true Rollers. Their habitat is dense forests, where they mostly hunt insects on the ground, but also small vertebrates such as lizards and chameleons. They are diurnal, but their activity may last well into the night. Most species make their nests in caves up to 1.2 m long, which they dig into the ground, only the Short-legged Ground-roller nests in tree cavities. The female lays 3 to 4 eggs in the nest chamber and incubates them, but the male brings food.
