The family of Nuthatches occurs in North America and Eurasia. They are rather small birds with a body length of 10.5 cm to 19.5 cm. The wings are long, the tail and legs are short, and the toes are relatively long. The beak is long, straight, pointed and quite powerful. Many species have a dark streak through the eyes. Nuthatches can also walk head down. They nest in caves in trees or rocks. The entrance is often plastered with mud. Or they build clay nests with a small entrance tube.
