The only two species in the family of Sugarbirds are restricted to southern Africa. Including the elongated tail feathers, their body length ranges from 23 cm to 44 cm; between 15 cm and 38 cm in length are attributable to the tail feathers. Both species are dependent on the presence of Protea. Their tongue is long, protrusible, tubular and brush-like at the tip. They have brown plumage and a long downwardly curved bill. Their main diet is nectar from proteas supplemented by arthropods. Both species are monogamous and breed exclusively in Protea bushes. They defend their territory violently. The nest in an open cup, in which usually 2 eggs are laid. The young are fed insects by both parents for several weeks even after they have fledged.
