 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Seriemas

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Cariamidae

You can get "Checklist of the Seriemas of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The only two species of the family of Seriemas occur only in South America. They reach heights of 75 cm to 90 cm. They have short broad wings and a long tail. The neck is long, the bill curved downwards. The long legs have tiny webs between the toes. Their habitat are savannahs and other open landscapes. They are terrestrial and do not fly well. As omnivores, they also eat poisonous snakes, although they are not immune to their venom. The nest of twigs is built on a tree or bush. The two eggs of the clutch are incubated by the pair for 25 to 26 days. Both parents take care of the young until they are almost grown up.
