The family of New Zealand Parrots is endemic to New Zealand. The body size ranges from 45 cm to 64 cm. Greenish and brownish tones with a blackish pattern dominate the plumage colors. One species is a flightless nocturnal terrestrial bird that consumes a variety of exclusively vegetarian food, while the other species are airworthy, intelligent inhabitants of various native habitats with large bills that penetrate to the snow line and take, in addition to vegetable food, also animal food up to carrion. They breed in caves, the clutches contain 1 to 5 eggs. The incubation period lasts 3 to 4 weeks, the nestling period 2.5 to 3.5 months.
