This family is limited to the continents of America and Africa. Most of the species in this family live in America, with only a few species in Africa. The size ranges from 12 cm to 100 cm. Many species have bright colors, caused by the Dyck textures in the feathers, in which incident light is refracted. Most of the species are cavity breeders.
