Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Philepittidae

You can get "Checklist of the Asities of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Asities is endemic to Madagascar. The body size ranges from 9 cm to 17 cm. Asities have round wings and short tails. The sexes are clearly different and the males have large, shiny blue and green bare skin areas on their faces. Uniquely in the bird world, the colors are created by ordered arrays of collagen fibers. Their habitat are the forests of Madagakar. They are highly arborial and live individually. They eat fruits, buds, nectar, insects and spiders. The nests hang from the tips of branches and have a covered entrance on the side. The clutch consists of up to 3 eggs. Little is known about the breeding biology.
