The species-rich family of the Antbirds occurs in the tropics of America from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. Antbirdss are generally small to medium-sized birds, ranging from 8 cm to 45 cm in length. Most antbirds have relatively large, heavy beaks, some with a hook at the tip and always with a tooth near the tip. Most of the species are inconspicuously colored. For them the forest is their habitat, and they mainly feed on arthropods. They live monogamous for life and defend their territory. Usually two eggs are laid in a raised nest, and the incubation and feeding of the offspring are shared. After hatching, each parent cares exclusively for one chick.
