The family of the Antpittas are restricted to tropical and subtropical Central and South America. They are 10 cm to 20 cm long. Their long and strong legs and the vestigial tail emphasize the upright posture. They are forest dwellers who mostly stay on the ground, especially since many of them are specialized ant-eaters. They lay 1 to 6 eggs in a tree nest, and both sexes share the incubation.
