The two species of the family of Painted Berrypeckers are endemic to New Guinea. This small family was only established on the basis of DNA studies. Their lenght ranges from 12 cm to 22 cm. Both species are diurnal tree inhabitants of the mountain forest. As far as is known, they are almost completely frugivorous. They are monogamous and build open bowl nests out of moss.
