 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Flamingoes

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Phoenicopteridae

You can get "Checklist of the Flamingoes of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Flamingos includes only a few species, but they have spread to the warm areas of all continents except Australia. With their long legs and long necks, the birds reach heights of up to 120 cm. The wings are large, the tail is short. The beaks are unique: bent down in the middle with a channel-shaped lower beak and a lid-shaped upper beak. In the water the beak is held upright; the tongue acts as a piston that sucks in the water and presses it out through the filters of the beak. Flamingos feed on small animals and parts of plants that float in the water. They breed in colonies, the nests are truncated cones made of mud. The young birds flee the nest and are fed by both parents.
