The family of Laughingthrushes is found in Africa and South Asia. Most of the species live in the tropics. They rarely migrate and are rather poor fliers. With almost 150 species, the family is relatively large and very diverse. It was only recently separated in the systematics from the more comprehensive family of Babblers.
