 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Hyliotas

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Hyliotidae

You can get "Checklist of the Hyliotas of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Hyliotas is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. The four species of this family had been assigned to various other families in the past, but based on DNA studies they have now been placed in a family in their own right. The body length ranges from 11 cm to 13 cm. They occur in open forests and savannahs. They feed mainly on insects and their eggs, which they usually look for high in the trees. They often hang upside down when foraging, but they can also catch their prey in flight. The nest is cup-shaped and the clutch usually contains two to four eggs. The breeding behavior is largely unknown.
