Sunbirds are among the most beautiful birds on earth. They are often mistaken for hummingbirds, but unlike these they belong to the songbirds and do not have their ability to fly. The plumage shimmers in a wide variety of colors, which moreover - like all iridescent colors - vary with the incidence of light. The body length ranges from 8 to 16 cm; some species have elongated central tail feathers, but all have short round wings. The beak is usually thin and curved and is used to pierce petals and soak up the nectar. Typical Sunbird nests consist of cobwebs and soft plant material and hang from branches.
