 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Frigate-birds

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Fregatidae

You can get "Checklist of the Frigate-birds of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Frigate-birds can be found at all tropical and subtropical seas. Their length ranges from 80 cm to 105 cm. They have very long wings, a curved beak, and a forked tail. The males have a scarlet throat pouch during the breeding season, which is inflated during courtship. They feed on fish, but never go down on the water, instead catch them in flight. Frigate birds often parasitize other birds by chasing them until they regurgitate their food. The nest can reach a diameter of 4.5 m. The single egg is incubated by both adult birds for 40 days. The chick is fledged after 4 to 5 months.
