The family of Mitrospingid tanagers occurs in southern Central America and in South America. The species of this family were previously assigned to the Tanagers, but have now been given the rank of a separate family based on genetic studies. The body size ranges from 17 cm to 19 cm. Their habitat are tropical rainforests. They consume both animal and vegetable foods. As far as is known, a cup-shaped nest is built between branches.
