 Avidiversity  AVITOPIA - Shoebills

Scientific system: Clements et al.

Familia: Balaenicipitidae

You can get "Checklist of the Shoebills of Planet Earth" as an e-book here.

The family of Shoebills includes only one species. It occurs only in Africa from South Sudan to Zambia. Shoebills are large birds with a height of 1.20 m and a wingspan of 2.60 m. The legs are long, the neck is long and thick, the beak is very large, broad and flattened. Its tip is hook-shaped. Shoebills live in moors and swamps. They are loners and mostly nocturnal. They live on fish, frogs, snakes, mussels, crabs and carrion. The huge beak is apparently also used for digging, because lungfish have been found among their food. The shallow nest is built on the ground. Two eggs are laid. The chicks are altricial.
