The family of Herons occurs on all continents and on many islands. The body length ranges from 28 nm to 140 cm. The wings are large, the tail is short. Legs, toes and neck are long, the latter has a characteristic S-shape. They feed mainly on fish, but also eat other small animals. They mostly breed in colonies. The food brought in is regurgitated in front of the chicks.
