The family of Kagus contains only one species and this is restricted to the island of New Caledonia. The body length is about 56 cm. The head wears a long crest, the beak and legs are red. The shy bird only becomes active at dusk. It is very attached to the ground, it also escapes on foot. Its diet consists of small animals. The courtship is like a dance and is performed by both partners with outstretched wings and a cocked hood. The nest is built in the shape of a bowl from brushwood and grass on the ground.
