With its heartland in Europe, France métropolitaine, France is the most visited country in the world. The altitude ranges from the two coasts on the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea to Mont Blanc in the Alps, with 4810 m the highest mountain in France. However, the country is predominantly characterized by plains and hills. The climate is temperate to Mediterranean. The diverse nature of France is preserved by 8 national parks and more than 50 regional nature parks. More than 270 IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) have been designated for the country by BirdLife International, including the great delta of the Rhône, the Camargue. The only endemic bird species is the Corsican Nuthatch, which means that Corsica is the only EBA (Endemic Bird Area) in France. The diversity of the biotopes, however, make France a highly attractive travel destination, especially for bird watchers.
