Iceland is the largest volcanic island on earth and is located just south of the Arctic Circle. It is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. The climate is oceanic cool. BirdLife International has identified nearly 100 IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas) in Iceland. E.g. Mývatn is the most important duck breeding center in Europe. In contrast to mammals, the bird life is extraordinarily rich in species. Iceland is one of the most popular observation areas for bird lovers.
