Kosovo is a small landlocked country in the center of the Balkan Peninsula. Geographically it is a depression between high mountains on the national borders. The eastern part of the depression is formed by the Kosovo Plain, the western part by Metohija . A continental climate prevails in the lower regions, although this is influenced in the west by the warm air masses of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, the mountain and forest regions represent a third climatic zone. Approx. 40% of the country's area is forested. Nature is preserved through the establishment of two national parks (Bjeshkët e Nemuna and Sharr Mountains), eleven nature reserves and more than a hundred other protected areas. This means that more than 10% of the country's area is under nature protection. In the national park Bjeshkët e Nemuna is the highest point of Kosovo (the Gjeravica with 2656 m above sea level). This national park has been recognized by BirdLife International as an IBA (Important Bird and Biodiversity Area).
