Malta is situated on the migration route of many bird species across the Mediterranean, so it is worth taking a look at the birdlife when visiting Malta. In 2001, Malta presented its first nature reserve (ir-Riserva Naturali ta'l-Għadira). This area is located in the extreme northeastern part of the island of Malta and mainly contains salt marshes. Here, more than 150 species of birds were seen, but few of them were actually breeding.
