Montenegro lies east of the Adriatic Sea; it is a mountainous, wooded country in the Dinaric Mountains. The altitudes range from a narrow coastal strip on the Mediterranean to Zla Kolata at 2534 m above sea level in the Prokletije massif. In between lies a waterless karst plateau. Only in the southeast are lowlands like those on Lake Skadar. The variety of landscapes makes Montenegro a "hot spot" for biodiversity - the bird life is also extraordinarily diverse for such a small country. Montenegro has protected almost 10% of its area and established five national parks for it. BirdLife International has recognized five areas as IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas). Ornithological trips to Montenegro can be very rewarding.
